Background

BG Alfonso Castilla was born in Seville on September 15th, 1970. Having joined the Military Academy in 1988, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Artillery Corps in July 1993.

Throughout his service, he held various leadership roles, commanding both a platoon and a helicopter company within the Attack Helicopter Battalion I, in Ciudad Real. He also served as an instructor pilot at the Army Aviation Academy in Madrid.

After his promotion to Major, he graduated from the General Staff course in 2006 and took on significant responsibilities at the Spanish Army Airmobile Brigade Headquarters and at the Higher Center for National Defense Studies in Madrid. In 2013, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and assumed command of the Manoeuvre Helicopter Battalion III, in La Rioja. By 2017, he was assigned to the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps in Thessaloniki, Greece.

In 2020, he was promoted to Colonel and appointed as the director of the Army Aviation Academy. He was promoted to Brigadier General in July 2024.

His international experience includes participation in three operations: Bosnia in 1999, Afghanistan in 2012, and EUTM-Somalia as part of the European Union Military Staff in Brussels in 2017. He holds university degrees in Computer Science and Law, and is fluent in both English and French.

Currently, he is the Under Director for Procurement in the Logistics Command of the Spanish Army. Recently, he has been appointed DCOS OPS NRDC-GR, effective from August 31st, 2025.
