“Journalists’ Safety in War Zones” NRDC-GR Public Affairs Office Annual Seminar

On 30th and 31st of January 2024, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Greece (NRDC-GR) conducted the “Journalists’ Safety in War Zones” annual Seminar at its premises.

The event was organized by the Public Affairs Office and chaired by NRDC-GR/DCOS COMM, who emphasized the importance of the seminar in broadening the  knowledge on the safety of journalists in war zones, sharing best practices, and enhancing the capability to address critical challenges effectively.

The two-day seminar brought together esteemed journalists and military representatives, fostering a dialogue on journalists’ safety, under the commitment of the military to its core values as well as its respective obligations under the international   legal framework. The discussions aimed to enhance  the mutual understanding and establish a foundation for trust and collaboration between the military and the press.

Topics included the military’s role to safeguard journalists, as well as legal obligations to ensure their protection. The seminar provided a unique opportunity for participants to share insights, experiences, and perspectives, contributing to the development of effective strategies for journalists’ safety in conflict zones.

The distinguished briefers included Dr. Aikaterini Mantsou from the General Secretariat for Media and Communication, Dr. Konstantinos Balomenos, International Relations expert and former Director General of the General Directorate of National Defence Policy and International Relations, as well as esteemed professors from Greek universities and notable journalists, including war correspondents that brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussions, making significant contributions to the overall success of the seminar.

The event was attended by representatives from the 1st German-Netherlands Corps (1st GNC), the 1st GR Army/ European Union Operations Headquarters (EL EU OHQ), the Multinational Corps Southeast (MNC-SE), the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Spain (NRDC-SP) and the XXIV GR Armored Brigade that actively engaged in the seminar, demonstrating a collective NATO commitment to advancing the discourse on journalists’ safety in conflict zones.
