Chief of Staff NRDC-GR


M.Gen. Theodoros ATHANASOPOULOS was born in Athens, in 1967. He was admitted to the Hellenic Army Academy in 1985, and in 1989 he received his commission as Second Lieutenant in the Artillery Branch.

He was promoted as follows:

He was assigned to several assignments, to include:

  • 1990-1991 Artillery Training Center, Thiva – Greece as Trainer,
  •  1991-1993 Platton Commander and Company Commander in 158 S/P Howitzer Bn,
  •  1993-1996 Educator in Military Academy, Athens, GRE,
  • 1996-1999 Company Commander, S2-S3 Officer and Deputy Commander in 80 Artillery Bn,
  •  1999-2003 S3 Officer and Deputy Commander in 193 MLRS Bn,
  • 2004-2005 Branch Hd for Peacekeeping Ops in B΄Corps,
  • 2005-2008 Staff Officer in JFCNP/J1 (Manpower Branch) allocated also in the JOC and the JOPG,
  • 2008-2010 Battalion Commander in 105 S/P Howitzer Bn,
  • 2010-2011 Section Chief for Artillery Studies/Research/Procurements in HAGS, Artillery Directorate,
  • 2011-2013 Director of Artillery Personnel Dpt, in HAGS, Artillery Directorate,
  • 2013-2014 Section Chief for International Planning (NATO/EU) in HAGS, Defence, Planning and Programming Directorate,
  • 2014-2017 Deputy Branch Hd in SHAPE/CCOMC/CIG/CMA (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe / Comprehensive Crisis and Operations Management Centre / Crisis Identification Group / Civil-Military Analysis),

  • 2019-2020 DCOS SUPPORT in NRDC-GR,
  • 2020-2021 Director of Training and Doctrine Directorate in HAGS,
  • 2021-2022 Commander in 88 Military Command (Brigade level), Lemnos, GRE.

He has attended successfully all national basic and advanced mandatory training for Artillery Officers.

He also graduated from Greek Staff Officer’s School, the Supreme Joint War College and the National Defence College. He holds a Master in Applied Strategy and International Security of the Plymouth University (2014-2016).

He has been awarded with all decorations, commendations and medals provided for his rank, commanding and staff assignments.

He speaks English fluently, as well as Italian in intermediate level.

He is married with two sons (28,17) and one daughter (26).

On 30 March 2022, M.Gen. Theodoros ATHANASOPOULOS has been appointed as Chief of Staff in NATO RAPID DEPLOYABLE CORPS GREECE.
